Things You Can Do

Confront homophobic remarks and statements!
The use of words like "fag" and "queer" should be no more tolerated than the use of words like "nigger" and "kike." The expression of anti- gay and -lesbian sentiment should not go unchallenged. Such talk serves only to perpetuate discrimination. Support acceptance and denouce homophobia, sexism, racism, and all forms of bigotry.

Provide role models!
Make it clear that there is nothing wrong with gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered friends. Openly participate in GLBT programs and invite others to join you.

Acquaint yourself with the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community!
Become aware of issues relating to GLBT rights; problems faced when "coming out of the closet"; and the difficulties of "being out" on campus, in the community, with one's family, and at work. Familiarize yourself with some of the positive aspects of being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered -- there are thousands.

Don't assume everyone is heterosexual!
Kinsey's study of sexuality found sexual orientation exists as a continuum between exlcusively homosexual and exclusively heterosexual. Kinsey found that most of us fall somewhere in the middle. Research indicates that at least 10% of the population is lesbian or gay and even more are bisexual.
